sounds

Black people are often surrounded by sounds we do not consent to and that disrupt our internal systems: clangs of construction due to gentrification, cacophonous community violence, blaring police sirens, voices of those who do not recognize our humanity, and other distortive and distressing noise.

Black people also create distinct, restorative soundscapes through music, storytelling, and laughter, through the tinkle of hair accessories, the percussion of hands, the rhythms of footwork, and the tonality of nonverbal communication.

These are some of my efforts to create sonic atmospheres that provide refuge, affirmation, and invigoration to myself and others.
